Most yoga classes at XO Yoga begin with some type of centering exercise to bring the participants to the preset moment on their yoga mats and leave behind their often hectic lives outside the studio. Student focus on their breath and begin to control the quantity and quality of each inhalation and exhalation with awareness. Also at this early part of the practice, students are invited to explore some personal or suggested meditation and to set an intention for their practice. Students often silently make an offering of their practice to a loved one or to a cause about which they care deeply. Following this centering process is followed by pratapana, or preparatory exercises and movements to open and lubricate the joints and awaken the muscles. With the mind and body thus prepared, the instructor leads the students through an asana inquiry where various postures are explored as they related to the students themselves. Depending on the class, postures may be held for longer duration or the class may moved through a flow of postures. All classes focus on the health of the spine as well as releasing blocked energy in the shoulders and hips. The last segment of class is dedicated to deep relaxing, or savasana, where student lie in stillness and allow their bodies to integrate the effects of the practice and take this new-found energy out into their daily lives.
