The Yoga and Meditation Center of Montclair, founded in 1976 by Susan Morton, is the oldest school of yoga in northern New Jersey. Classes are held by experienced teachers in a supportive and non-competitive environment: yoga postures are introduced with patient attention and then refined and deepened over time. Classes include asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and guided meditations and visualizations. Our approach to yoga is a blend of styles that emphasize strength, flexibility and balance with a focus on alignment in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar.

All of our classes are taught with respect for the uniqueness of each individual. From this perspective all levels of experience or inexperience are welcome. Our yoga classes are held as 4-week courses, which allow both the teacher and the student time to get to know each other and work together to achieve the students’ goals. We also limit our yoga classes to approximately 15 students to give each individual enough space to relax and receive individualized attention from their instructor. We provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for students of all levels, with class options for those that are brand new to yoga to the experienced student looking to explore a deeper practice.

Our meditation classes are held in 6-week courses and the size of the classes are limited to approximately 20 students. All of our various meditation courses give students the opportunity to explore ‘just being’ or ‘effortless being’; which is being fully present in the moment, the state that is referred to in Buddhist teaching as ‘ultimate medicine’. This is a deeply healing and restorative process that goes beyond relaxation and opens into the boundlessness and spaciousness of existence itself, where we learn how simple it is to incorporate mindfulness into our daily lives.
