Yoga Union aspires to a "styleless style," recognizing the importance above all of awareness or consciousness in the pursuit of Yoga. The teaching emphasizes alignment, breath and serenity in all poses to achieve a strong, beautiful and fulfilling practice in an atmosphere of cheerful hard work. Awareness is the foundation of the practice, which is directed towards the individual ability of the student, even within a group class, creating a harmonious community of individual practitioners. The individual and the group balance each other, fostering awareness and collaboration. Alignment and flow alternate, advanced variations being given for advanced students. Yoga Union also offers the only Yoga for Scoliosis class on the East Coast. Alison West, who has been teaching in NYC since 1988, also conducts bi-annual Teacher Trainings, highly regarded for their emphasis on teaching practice and rigorous, all-round training. (Please see Teacher Trainings).

YOGA THERAPY SPECIALIZATIONS: YOGA for BACKCARE AND SCOLIOSIS, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY, DIABETES AND ASTHMA

Alison West, ERYT, Ph.D., is known for her dynamic and precise instruction, coming from both backgrounds of Iyengar and Astanga yoga. Her first training was under the aegis of the Sivandanda organization where she completed both the Teacher Training and Advanced Teacher Training Courses. From 1990 to 1995, she taught at Jivamukti in its young years on Second Avenue. At the same time she began her studies with senior Iyengar teachers Kevin Gardiner and Mary Dunn, as well as other leading Iyengar teachers Genny Kapuler, Bobbie Clennell, and Robin Janis. Later she Alison studied Astanga yoga with Sri K. Patthabi Jois in Mysore and with her friend and colleague Eddie Stern in New York. Alison spent September 2004 in Pune, India, studying at the Iyengar Institute and apprenticing in the medical classes with BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Stephanie Quirk. She received her Yoga for Scoliosis from Elise Miller. She has been teaching in New York since 1988 and gives workshops around the country and in Europe. The first of the Principles of Practice that she teaches is awareness or consciousness.
