Baby Yoga refers to a diversified set of gentle interactive practices between a baby and a caring adult for enhancing the wellbeing and development of the baby from birth to the third year. Birthlight Baby Yoga is a perfect companion to Baby Massage. This course reviews the basics of infant massage but a dedicated training is recommended for those who wish to teach Baby Massage professionally. Simple yoga movements with babies are still transmitted through generations in some parts of India. In response to the needs of today’s Western babies, Birthlight Baby Yoga includes a range of diversified practices, which all converge towards the essence of Yoga as being fully in the present with a joy of being. The Baby Yoga Diploma course trains teachers to facilitate the mutual enjoyment of parents and babies and creative play between them, with all the health benefits that are derived from these harmonizing practices.
Who is this course for?
Qualified Baby Massage instructors and health visitors are the most numerous applicants but this course is open to all health practitioners working with babies, to yoga teachers with experience of babies and to parents who are motivated to teach other parents. It is not necessary to have a previous qualification in infant massage to enrol on this course.
Applicants who have no previous professional experience of working with babies will need to acquire a basic knowledge of infant development from suggested reading on the course and demonstrate their competence when completing their Diploma.
Birthlight’s ‘mother’s route to training’ has produced some very fine teachers of Baby Yoga.
What is taught on the course?
The course consists of 20 sessions with 30 hours of tuition over 5 days: 12 on the Part 1 course (3 days) and 8 on the Part 2 course (2 days). Like all Birthlight courses, the course is a blend of theory, practice and teaching methods with the aim of imparting practical proficiency and confidence to course participants over a relatively short time.
The course includes a clear presentation of the knowledge Baby Yoga instructors need to have in order to teach parents safely and competently. The course contents are constantly updated in order to integrate new research findings.
The practices taught on the course are an updated version of the pioneering set developed by Françoise Freedman as ‘Baby Yoga’ including ‘relaxed holds’, ‘swings, dips and lifts’, the 3 ‘hip sequences’, moves for strength and balance, moves for ‘tummy time’. Songs and movements together as developed by Sally Lomas are also taught on this course.
The course covers movements that facilitate the transitions to sitting, crawling, standing and walking, using yoga principles such as non violence, quiet observation, detachment, respect and compassion. The teaching of joint relaxation between parent and baby is given special importance as a way to help parents release tension and to allow babies experience relaxed parents.
Teaching a group of parents and babies together can be daunting. The course offers effective resources for creating flexible lesson plans and offering classes that are both professional and enjoyable.
Whenever possible, two of the sessions on this course involve practice with guest babies rather than with dolls. We positively welcome babies who come on the course with participants but we ask that a helper be ready to take care of them if and when needed.
Is special equipment needed for the course?
We recommend that you purchase a weighted demonstration doll that handles like a real baby for purposes of practice and teaching. Dolls soon become part of your class if not of your family. Apart from a doll, no special equipment is required on the course as we supply mats and cushions for sitting on the floor. Those who prefer sitting on chairs can do so.
How is the course structured?
The course consists of three modules: Part 1 (first module) imparts the theoretical and practical knowledge required to start teaching over a three day intensive course, residential or non-residential. The second module is self practice over approximately six months, including setting up a Baby Yoga class as well as observing other teachers in their areas. Each student can use this time to select areas of special interest and read around them towards the completion of the Diploma coursework. Course tutors are available for support and advice if needed during this period. The Birthlight buddy and watchdog schemes offer additional sources of support. In order for students to have insurance during this time, Birthlight has arranged a student policy with Care Sure for one year.
The third module, Part 2, is a two day course, residential or non-residential.
Students have a maximum period of 24 months to complete the Diploma from the time of their Part 1 course.
How is this course assessed?
Part 1 is tutor assessed by means of a straightforward written test and the completion of a work sheet, complemented by a simple practical assessment consisting of teaching part of a class. Anyone following the taught sessions with attention can go through this assessment successfully. In the rare instances when someone needs to repeat the assessment, arrangements are made for the student to be supported and to take a second assessment at a later date.
Successful completion of Part 1 entitles holders to be insured for teaching for their Diploma case studies during one year following their Part 1 course. Diploma portfolios are carefully assessed and count as 75% of the Diploma assessment, with a final practical assessment as 25%.
Which qualification is gained on this course?
The Diploma in Baby Yoga is the full teaching qualification recognised for purposes of insurance and professional accreditation.
Birthlight is the first and only training provider in Baby Yoga in the UK. Birthlight Baby Yoga is registered with Skills for Health in the UK and is accredited with the Guild of Infant Massage and Touch Therapies.
