Sanskrit is the sacred language of yoga. In this workshop we will focus our attention on transliterated Sanskrit - Sanskrit as it is written using the Roman alphabet and pronunciation cues called 'diacritics' - rather than on learning the Sanskrit alphabet. We’ll work on developing our proficiency in proper pronunciation and recognizing pronunciation cues, explore the word constructions and meanings of the names of yoga postures and common terms of yoga philosophy, and we’ll look at the difference between mantras – sonic meditations such as the mystical phrases of the ancient Upanishads, sutras – codified transmissions such as those in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and slokas – narrative compositions such as the poetic verses of the Bhagavad-gita. This workshop will be of particular interest to yoga teachers who want to develop confidence in their chanting and instructional use of Sanskrit in classes and workshops. It will also be of interest to yoga practitioners who want to explore the language in which yoga philosophy is most concisely expressed.

About Hari-Kirtana Das: Hari-kirtana das has had a life-long interest in yoga, beginning his study of asana, meditation, and yoga philosophy as a teenager and spending his early twenties living in yoga ashrams and intentional spiritual communities. He expanded his yoga practice at the Jivamukti Yoga School in New York City in 2007 and became a certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher in 2009. His classes combine challenging poses sequenced at an invigorating pace with detailed instruction on how to move into your fullest expression of the poses (some of which you might not have realized you can do). His classes always feature an eclectic and uplifting music mix. Hari-kirtana is registered with the Yoga Alliance (E-RYT 200, RYT 500), holds an 800-hour Jivamukti Yoga teaching certification, speaks regularly at colleges and universities on the relationship of classical yoga philosophy to contemporary life, and teaches classes, workshops, and yoga teacher training modules throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
