Ann Barros, C.I.Y.I from the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco since 1980, with 36 years teaching experience, will guide teachers-in-training how to safely support and teach pre- and post-natal students in yoga classes. Pre-natal, or Post-natal experienced students, (with at least one year of yoga experience), may also join this special program. The focus will be on the important hormonal changes during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy. We will discuss the phenomenon of the body’s increased production of elastin, - slender bundles of proteins that provide flexibility to connective tissue (tissue that supports the body's joints and organs). We will analyze the importance of maintaining strength in the joints as this elasticity increases during the natural stages of pregnancy. Participants will receive guidelines for which asanas to avoid, or to practice additionally, during each specific stage of pregnancy. Ann will provide the intelligent use of props to support the body during weight increase and provide barometers for modifying poses especially during the final trimester. During the post-natal sessions, Ann will offer fun and creative ways to include baby with new mothers in gentle restorative poses.
+Sunday, December 1~ Pre-Natal 1st & 2nd Trimesters ~ 2 sessions: Morning / Afternoon ~ 3 hrs. each
Teachers in training will enrich their anatomy and physiology knowledge base with Ann's detailed approach to the safe teaching and practice of asanas during the early stages of pregnancy. We will discuss the phenomenon of “morning sickness” as the body experiences hormonal changes, and which poses to practice to provide relief and support during this initial phase.
Ann is adept at offering anatomy / physiology education in a fun and enjoyable setting while at the same time giving precise, careful alignment orientation, including the intelligent use of props.
+Monday, December 2 ~ Pre-Natal 3rd Trimester ~ 2 sessions : Morning / Afternoon ~ 3 hrs. each
In this, the most important phase of pregnancy, teachers in training will be guided to confidently modify asanas for the pregnant student’s bodily changes, and relationship to gravity. Even Savasana, the Corpse Pose, (and the most important of all asanas), should be modified for comfort during this final trimester. We will analyze which poses to avoid during this final trimester and why certain poses should be avoided, or modified. We will have extended sitting and reclining breathing sessions to help prepare for childbirth.
In both pre-natal sessions on Sunday and Monday, there will be time set aside for student teaching so that all participants can experience leading our model pre-natal class.
+Tuesday, December 3 ~ Post-Natal~ 2 sessions: Morning / Afternoon ~ 3 hrs. each
New moms are filled with wonder and amazement at having brought forth new life, and often experience euphoria and an eagerness to ’get back in shape’. Many new moms are fatigued and frustrated with the lack of time to practice. Ann will provide easy at home short practices that new moms can sneak in during baby’s napping. Since new baby and mom are nearly inseparable, we will also explore with Ann’s guidance, fun and creative ways to support new baby while receiving a much-deserved restorative session or at home practice.
Ann will provide a logical progression of core strengthening poses to begin to tone muscles with special care for new moms into proceed gradually. Teachers in training will come away from this intensive teacher training enriched with new tools and the confidence to safely, intelligently, and compassionately guide pre- and post- natal students in future yoga classes.
