Aging Gracefully 4 week Series with Linda Sundays 7/14, 7/21, 8/4, 8/11 4:00-5:30 pm The aging process is not a mistake, a problem or something to fear. This journey is an opportunity for growth. Take time to explore the effects of a yoga practice on your state of mind, nervous system and your physical body as you age gracefully. There’s no age limit at which our bodies or minds stop responding to exercise and mindfulness. In this series, we will focus on posture and form as we stretch and strengthen muscles, adapting poses for different life stages. We will learn to continue to live fully by finding new ways to relate to our life and our bodies, cultivating gratitude that we can still use our bodies in a graceful way. We just have to be a little more creative! Awareness Body awareness and observation of our internal patterns allow us a fresh perspective on our life and strengthen our sense of self. Balance We need to establish balance. Internally, balance is equanimity. Externally, we see it as functional strength. Improper balance can lead to pain in the knees, hips and back. We’ll take a look at how we can open the feet and strengthen the core for more stability using just enough effort but without strain. Form As we age, paying attention to the mechanics of movement is more important than ever. We need to remind ourselves to pay good attention and work within our limitations. This can help us avoid injury. In class, we will use props to make yoga poses safely accessible and comfortable. Focus Breath work and meditation sharpen the mind. When we breathe deeply it helps to keep the rib-cage flexible and creates more space for our heart and lungs to work better. By taking time to be quiet, we learn to let go and open ourselves to the present moment. The mat can become a place of refuge and time for self reflection.
