Return Yoga
Most of us are introduced to yoga as asana, or physical postures. While body is an essential element of the yogic path, it is only one of eight branches. Yamas, Niyamas, Pranayama, and four elements of psychology are also involved. Taken as a whole, the yogic path is said to promise freedom from suffering and skill in life. Ancient practices, modern need. Yet it is notoriously hard to understand what yoga is supposed to be, aside from a yoga class. What does a 'yogic lifestyle' mean to us neurotic Americans? What is freedom from suffering, skill in life, to us here and now who live with globalization, democracy, and western medicine? What IS promised, why are the last four limbs all some kind of brain work or meditation, and how could you, personally, start to include that in your weekly asana class and off of the mat?

Learn what ancient wisdom may have to do with our modern western lives. Gain a little insight into pranayama and the psychology of yoga. Consider what 'enlightenment' and 'freedom' might mean for you, personally, and what that means for your yoga classes.

In class prompts for journaling and reflection, guided meditation, simple asana practice, and a take home workbook.
