Part I: A psychodynamic view of addiction is presented that introduces the concept of transpersonal evil to explain how addiction takes over an individual’s life. Using insights from Jungian psychology a model of addiction is proposed that looks at how the individual psyche become a battleground between the true self and false self with greater forces also enjoined in the battle for the life of the addicted individual.

Part 2: In the second part of the workshop hitting bottom, the conversion experience, and the healing process of recovery are examined using the 12 steps of Alcoholic Anonymous. Jung’s words, Spiritus Contra Spiritum, or spirit against spirit offers insight into the spiritual experience needed to neutralize the transpersonal evil.
