In Ashtanga Yoga (Eight Limbs), Pratyahara is the fifth limb. Pratyahara is the withdrawal of the senses. Through this powerful practice comes “supreme mastery,” as stated in the Yoga Sutras. Used for controlled and inward focus, learning Pratyahara is required for advanced meditation and reaching the goal of yoga. In Ayurveda, Pratyahara is used to heal and restore the senses, calm the doshas (disturbances), and add clarity to the mental state. We will discuss this sutra (YS 2:54) and learn techniques to acquire a qualitatively better experience during meditation practice and for health. Students should have had at least studied an introductory meditation course. This class is appropriate for those in a Yoga Teachers’ Training Program. There will be seated and prone practices, so come prepared with mat, cushion and blankets. Alternately, chairs are available for those who preferthem. Please refrain from wearing strong scents and do wear clean, comfortable clothing. (Qualifies for 2.5 CEU Credits with Yoga Alliance.)
