Yoga & Poetry Writing Workshop with Jesse Curran Sunday, March 23 1:00 – 3:30 pm Northport Yoga Center ? Poetry and Yoga have been inseparable as forms of spiritual development and expression from their very inceptions. Ancient poets and yogis alike knew that language itself is a powerful vehicle of meditation, and in fact the Bhagavad Gita, the most ancient and foundational extant yogic text, is written in poetic verse, and was originally recited, or sung, rather than read. The art of poetry, like the practice of yoga, asks us to refine our attention, embrace vulnerability, and cultivate acceptance. Poetry, like yoga, inspires delight in the richness of the sensorial present, and works to bring conscious attention to what is right here, right now. Another vital shared nuance of both poetry and yoga is that each is more process than product, or as Wendell Berry writes of poetry, “Poetry is not the words on the page, but the mode of activity in the mind of the poet,” and Sri Pattabhi Jois explains of yoga, “yoga is 1% theory, and 99% practice.” In this workshop we will practice some basic Hatha Yoga pranayama and asana to connect with breath and body, working towards a relaxed and alert alpha state, which will help us to engage with our innate creative energies. We will then embark on a journey of self-expression through a series of exploratory and highly accessible poetry writing exercises intended to develop our experience with ideas such as poetic imagery, figures, and rhetorical devices. Although we will each be working individually, the group dynamic is an essential element of this process, providing a strong, safe, and intimate community that will nurture the transformation of vulnerability into creative expression...or art. There is no need for previous yoga and/or poetry writing experience to participate in this workshop. Please bring a notebook and a favorite pen or pencil.

Workshop Fee: $35 Please pre-register by emailing: Jesse Curran holds a PhD in English from Stony Brook University, where she teaches courses in literature, writing, and environmental humanities. Her essays and poetry have been published (or are forthcoming) in The Emily Dickinson Journal, The Kudzu Review, Green Humanities, The Fourth River, Blueline, Inner Art Journal, and The Long Island Quarterly. She also leads a weekly hatha yoga class at Northport Yoga Center, which works to integrate the intuitive meditative awareness awakened through poetic experience with the intentional breath and spatial awareness nurtured through yoga pranayama and asana practice.
