We have become a sleep-deprived nation that can’t get to sleep and can’t stay asleep. What’s the problem? Our increasingly fast-paced lives and the stress, anxiety, and fatigue that go along with them have sent our nervous systems into rebellion. Most of us are stuck in a constant state of arousal, where our sympathetic (aka “fight or flight” response) nervous system is active. We’ve forgotten how to come back to a place of calm, to relax the body and quiet the mind. For many, this means sleepless nights, sporadic sleep, or disturbed sleep. For some, it means turning to a pill for a full night’s sleep. However, there is another option. Yoga has proven methods of calming the sympathetic nervous system and triggering the parasympathetic (aka “rest and digest” response) nervous system. Using specific poses, breath work, and systematic relaxation, you can physically relax the body, calm the mind, and get a better night’s sleep. Learn ancient techniques that can help you relax, sleep better, and ultimately, live better.
